Art on Board Auction with works from the Deutsche
Bank Collection on the MS Europe
 Katharina
Sieverding, untitled, 1998 Deutsche
Bank Collection
It’s widely regarded
to be one of the most exclusive cruises in the world. And now the MS
Europe is even turning into a floating gallery! During EUROPA.art
2008 — a cruise with a program especially geared towards art lovers
—the Deutsche Bank Collection will show over twenty works on board the
luxury liner, putting them up for bid during a festive celebration. The
proceeds from the auction, held by the Phillips
de Pury Auction House, will go to the Deutsche
Bank Africa Foundation. Since 2001, the foundation has been supporting
social projects in South Africa. Under the motto Touching
Lives—Shaping Futures, it supports among other things
educational programs and an initiative for integrating AIDS orphans.
The spectrum of works Deutsche Bank is making available
for this good cause ranges from established positions to the works of true
newcomers. Two of the "classics" are Sigmar
Polke, who mixes pop influences and quotes from 1950s imagery in his
silkscreen Optimierung, and one of Katharina
Sieverding’s iconic self-portraits.

Julia Schmidt, untitled (stripper), 2008 Deutsche
Bank Collection
Among the younger artists is Julia
Schmidt, one of Germany’s most promising young painters. Her five-part
edition Untitled (stripper) was created for the exhibition Freisteller,
which introduced the 2008
Villa Romana fellows in the Deutsche Guggenheim. Another highlight of
the auction is Isa
Genzken’s XXL. The black plastic banner is based on her
installation Oil, shown at the German
Pavilion of the 2007 Biennale in Venice. The artist created the
edition exclusively for Deutsche Bank, the pavilion’s main sponsor.
